But why on earth spend $228 on a shoe that I will find horribly uncomfortable (I will) and will only wear once or twice (if that)? Jonathan Canlas is an incredible photographer who shoots all film, all of the time. He holds Film is Not Dead workshops throughout the country. I had the privilege of attending one last week right here in New York. It was a complete blast and I learned a ton from Jonathan (his work flow, his go-to exposures depending upon the type of film, for example). He's an open book! The top photograph is of photographer Joseph Amundsen (and Jonathan's assistant) and the bottom two are of photographers Peter Mercado and Tim Massie, fellow attendees. I had a fantastic, fantastic time. Jonathan also has a guide for those of you who'd like to get back into film or start using it for the first time: it's called the FIND guide.

50th Wedding Anniversary Party

M & J will have been married for 50 years this December. They were married the day after Christmas. They had no wedding, no wedding cake. There was no bouquet toss or champagne. They went to the justice of the peace with two friends as witnesses. The rumor was that it wouldn't last. As only a party celebrating these two could, the party ended with a pie fight. You can watch it here. Congratulations to two of my favorite people in the world. You can see more photos of the event here (more to be uploaded soon!).

Disgruntled Bit-Players, a sketch comedy group which began in Seattle, had a 10-year reunion show on July 31, 2011. Members of the old group came from all over the country to put on the show: New York City, Chicago, Indianapolis and Iowa City. I had the pleasure of photographing one of their rehearsals. New Project: Old Camera Series: Long Island City on the Agfa Isolette II

I recently used the Agfa Isolette II as part of the New Project: Old Camera series. A medium format folder camera with no internal light meter, it uses 120 roll film and slides easily into a pocket (a large pocket, but still, a pocket). This particular camera belonged to my mother's father and I felt especially honored to be using it.

I recently stayed at the Ace in Portland. It's a design-junkie's paradise (not to mention that there is also a Stumptown next door). Portland is an awesome town, filled with cool cafes, beautiful re-purposed buildings and tons and tons of food trucks. Next time, hopefully, I'll have more time there. As my husband knows, I'm completely obsessed with this camera wall, as seen in the Levi's Photo Workshop down in the Deitch Projects space at 18 Wooster Street. They rented out vintage cameras (and a few non-vintage, like the Instax) for free. It was a really wonderful space and a truly incredible experience to have hung out there.

Jury Duty in Chinatown on the Minolta SR-T 101

I recently had the pleasure of being summoned for jury duty in Chinatown. I brought my new-old Minolta SR-T 101 35 mm camera with me (acquired at the camera sale bonanza at Housing Works) and bought film during my lunch break. When I realized that the film would have to go through the scanner, I shot through the entire roll on the fifteen minute walk back to the courthouse. It was a pretty fun exercise on an extremely hot summer day in New York City.

We came away with a carton of homemade pickles, a wood drawer and a little car without a wheel. We also managed the trip without a stroller. A victory, that.

My husband found this delightful kitty (who he named Henry) outside our front door last night. He really has a wonderful, sweet personality and is so incredibly friendly. My husband is not keen on the idea of another cat (we already have one) so he carted him off to the local shelter this morning. If you would like a delightful kitty, let me know, I'll make sure you two meet!

Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge 1.01.11

Every January 1st, my husband and I (and now with our son) ride the train out to Coney Island so that he can participate in the Polar Bear Plunge. It's a total blast. The night before I always run in the Midnight Run in Central Park. It's a fantastic way to celebrate the New Year.

One of these photos is quite blurry - but I decided I kind of like it anyway. It was shot right before my camera had a serious problem - caused by myself. I'd wrapped the film around the wrong spool, inexplicably. Note to self: don't do that.

My father always had a lot of brilliant photo books laying around the house while I was growing up (Diane Arbus, for one). I love this photo of him. He has a great eye.

P.S. According to my father, this was taken by his good friend (they are still friends) around 1950 or 1951. They were on a photo shoot together! And guess what? They BOTH still go out on photo shoots.

We met a few friends last minute at Venus Cafe (which, by the way, has the best wait staff, ever). I took a few photos of my friend's beautiful children with the new Portra film. I was pretty convinced that there would be very little, if anything, salvageable because the light was so low. Surprise! I think it might be magic. Now, go shoot some film!

We spent the holidays in the Pacific Northwest. There's nothing quite like hanging out with a couple of sweet horses Christmas morning.

Geek info: These were all shot with a Mamiya 645 PRO without a light meter. Sadly it died moments later. RIP Mamiya 645 PRO.

Also, these were processed and scanned at Panda Lab in Seattle and shipped to me in NYC. They did a great job.

Just Two Little Things

When I was in Brugge, I stayed in a beautiful little hotel. Our room had enormous, black metal windows that opened up to a stone courtyard. We got there at dusk. The room was flooded with beautiful light. And there were bats flying madly through the courtyard. The room was done in black and white stripes. It was simple but beautiful. This bouquet made me think of that room. I love that unexpected touch of a black and white striped ribbon.

New Project: Old Camera: The Canon T70

These were taken with a Canon T70, which I was given for free on Friday when it looked like there was so much corrosion that the camera was inoperable. A little screwdriver action, some rubbing alcohol and new batteries seemed to do the trick. I took these on a 12 mile run on Saturday. Even though this isn't a camera I already had, I'm putting it in the New Project: Old Cameras series. It's a fun little camera to play around with.

Jonah's Just Begun

This is Jonah. Jonah was very recently diagnosed just a few months ago, with an insidious disease, Sanfilippo Syndrome, Type C. There is no cure.

From the Jonah's Just Begun website, "Jonah lacks a crucial enzyme to break down a toxic material that is now accumulating in his body. In time, this buildup will result in any number of injuries to his body: mental retardation, bone deformation, organ and tissue damage, followed by death."

However, Jonah's parents are working feverishly to change that prognosis with their foundation, Jonah's Just Begun.

How you can help:

1) Donate to the Foundation, Jonah's Just Begun. They need funding for an important study.
2) "Like" their foundation on facebook,
3) Take photos of your children writing "Jonah's Just Begun.org" in chalk on the sidewalk and upload it to their facebook site
4) If you know someone with Sanfilipo get in touch with the Foundation, they are looking for participants for the study and
5) If you are a medical professional, learn as much as you can about this rare disease that often goes misdiagnosed for years.

Phil Roeder is scanning and uploading his father's photos from the 1950s. He writes, "While I am using my late father's camera this week to shoot some film for my 365 project, each night I am posting photos that he took with the same camera more than 55 years ago.

These photos were taken while my Dad served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. They were taken with a Zeiss Ikon Contessa, with a Tessar f2.8/45mm lens, and were shot on Kodachrome 35mm transparency film. I recently had about 70 out of nearly 1,000 slides he shot scanned by ScanCafe in order to preserve as well as share on Flickr.

Most of the photos I'm posting to Flickr were taken over a one year period, between September 1953 and August 1954. The caption for each photo is simply what my Dad noted on each slide."
